Remove Silence from Audio
Remove silence and long pauses from podcasts, lectures, voice notes and videos. Auto-detect, preview, then download MP3, M4A, WAV or MP4. Nothing uploaded.
About Silence Remover
Silence Remover measures your recording's level every 10 ms, estimates its noise floor, and marks every pause quieter than a threshold for longer than a minimum length. You can hear the result before exporting, keep any individual pause, or shorten pauses to a fixed length instead of removing them. Joins get a short crossfade, and you can save MP3, M4A, WAV or a re-cut MP4.
How to use Silence Remover
- Add a recording or a video, or press the sample button to try it with a short talk.
- Choose a preset: Podcast / Voice, Lecture (shortens pauses to 0.4 s rather than removing them), Music (gentle) or Aggressive.
- Check the waveform: shaded areas will be removed, the padding next to speech stays. Tap any silence to keep it, or use Remove all and Keep all.
- Play with Without silence selected to hear the edit back to back, and compare with Original. The panel shows the new length, time saved and number of cuts.
- If needed, adjust Silence threshold (or press Auto), Minimum silence length, Padding kept around speech, Leave a pause of, and the crossfade length.
- Pick the format and download. Video export cuts picture and sound together.
When it helps
Tightening a podcast or interview
Removing dead air of half a second or longer, with about 120 ms of padding kept around words, typically makes a conversation feel brisker without anyone sounding rushed.
Lecture and class recordings
Teachers pause to write on the board. Shortening those pauses to a fraction of a second keeps the rhythm of the talk while cutting minutes from a long recording.
Screen recordings and talking-head videos
Cutting the pauses where you were thinking or clicking around makes a tutorial easier to follow. The same ranges are removed from the picture, so lips stay in sync.
Tips
- Auto sets the threshold above the noise floor it finds. If air conditioning or traffic is not being treated as silence, raise the threshold a few dB; if quiet word endings are being cut, lower it or increase padding.
- A short click or breath (under about 40 ms) does not split a pause, so you do not need a perfectly quiet room.
- For music, use the Music preset: it only removes long, almost silent gaps, such as the space between tracks in a long recording.
- Keep padding at 100 ms or more for speech. Below that, the starts of words beginning with soft sounds such as h or f can be clipped.
Limitations
- Detection is level-based. It cannot tell a pause from a quiet but important sound, or remove filler words such as um that are as loud as speech.
- Video export re-encodes the picture because cuts rarely land on key frames, so it is slower than audio export and the output is always MP4.
- Recordings with constant loud background noise or music under the voice have no real silence for it to find.
- M4A needs an AAC encoder in the browser; MP3 and WAV are always available.
What happens to your files
Analysis, preview and encoding run in a background worker inside your browser; the recording is not uploaded. The media library and MP3 encoder are loaded from File Studio's own site when you export. The file you add and the export are kept in the local File Studio workspace (IndexedDB) on this device until you remove them.
Find Every Pause Automatically
The tool measures the level of your recording every 10 milliseconds, estimates the background noise floor and marks anything quieter than the threshold for longer than the minimum silence as a pause. Presets set sensible values for Podcast / Voice, Lecture, Music (gentle, only long near-silent gaps) and Aggressive (every pause, for fast-paced edits), and you can fine-tune the threshold in dB, the minimum silence length and the padding kept around speech. A tiny click or breath inside a pause doesn't split it.
Check Every Cut Before You Download
The waveform shows each detected silence: red for the part that will be removed, amber for the padding that stays. Tap any silence to keep it, or open the list to keep or remove pauses one by one. Press Play with Without silence selected to hear only the kept parts, back to back, or switch to Original to compare. The original length, the new length, the time saved and the number of cuts update as you change the settings.
Podcasts, Lectures, Voice Notes and Videos — Processed on Your Device
Download the result as MP3 at 128, 192 or 320 kbps, as M4A/AAC or as WAV; the sample rate of your file is kept and every cut gets a short crossfade so there are no clicks. For a video, the same parts are removed from the picture and the sound so they stay in sync (the picture is re-encoded), or you can save just the audio. Everything runs in your browser, so recordings are never uploaded, there is no sign-up and no watermark; long files simply take a little longer on older phones.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I remove silence from a podcast or voice recording?
- Add the recording, pick the Podcast / Voice preset and press Play with "Without silence" selected to hear the result. The silent parts are shaded on the waveform; tap one to keep it. When it sounds right, download the MP3 (or M4A, WAV).
- Can it shorten long pauses in a lecture instead of cutting them out?
- Yes. Turn on "Shorten silences instead of removing them" (the Lecture preset does this) and choose how long a pause to leave, for example 0.4 s. Every long pause becomes a short one, so the talk stays natural but loses the dead air.
- What threshold, minimum silence and padding should I use?
- Start with Auto: it measures your recording's noise floor and sets the threshold a little above it. Minimum silence is the shortest pause that gets cut (0.5 s suits speech; 1–2 s keeps natural pauses). Padding is the bit of silence kept next to the words (about 100–150 ms) so speech doesn't sound clipped. If background noise isn't detected as silence, raise the threshold.
- Can I remove silent parts from a video?
- Yes. Add an MP4, MOV or WebM video and download MP4: the same parts are cut from the picture and the sound, so they stay in sync. Because the cuts rarely fall on key frames, the picture is re-encoded, which takes longer than an audio export on long videos. You can also save just the sound as MP3.
- Will the cuts click or pop?
- No. Every cut gets a short crossfade (10 ms by default, adjustable from 5 to 20 ms), so the joins are smooth, and the padding keeps the cut inside the quiet part rather than in the middle of a word.
- Is my audio uploaded? Which formats are supported?
- Nothing is uploaded: detection, preview and export all run inside your browser. It opens MP3, WAV, M4A/AAC, OGG, Opus and FLAC files and the sound of MP4, MOV and WebM videos, and saves MP3, M4A (where the browser has an AAC encoder), WAV or MP4. The sample rate of your file is kept.
