When you send a PDF document or upload a photo to the internet, you share much more than just the visible pixels or text. Digital files carry hidden layers of structural metadata called EXIF data (in photos) and Document Information Dictionaries (in PDFs). This metadata can reveal your exact physical location, personal name, company email, and editing history.

Before emailing files to external clients, submitting anonymous feedback, or publishing documents publicly, stripping metadata is essential for operational privacy.

What hidden information is stored in your files?

In smartphone and camera photos (EXIF metadata):

In PDF documents (XMP & Info dictionaries):

How to inspect and remove metadata

To inspect hidden properties:

Open PDF Info Inspector. Drop your document to view its internal PDF version, title, subject, keywords, author, creator application, and timestamps.

To sanitize and scrub metadata completely:

  1. Open Remove Metadata.
  2. Select your document.
  3. The tool strips all XMP metadata packets, Info dictionaries, author tags, and producer stamps, leaving a clean, sanitized PDF.
  4. Download the scrubbed file before emailing or uploading it.
