Password Protect PDF Online Free — AES Encryption
Add AES-256 password protection to any PDF. Free, no upload, works instantly. Your password never leaves your device. Compatible with all PDF readers.
About Protect
Protect adds an opening password to a PDF using AES-256 encryption, so the file cannot be viewed without that password. The protected copy also asks readers to block copying and editing while still allowing printing and form filling. Everything happens on your device, and the password is never sent anywhere.
How to use Protect
- Drop in the PDF you want to lock, or pick one already in your workspace.
- Type the password. The strength bar rewards length, capitals, digits and symbols; aim for the top of the scale.
- Type it again in the confirm box. The Protect button stays disabled until both entries match.
- Click Protect. The file is encrypted in the browser and saved as filename_protected.pdf.
- Download it, then open it once yourself to confirm the password prompt appears and the password works before you send it.
When it helps
Emailing salary slips, ITR copies or bank statements
Email attachments sit in inboxes and backups for years. Encrypting the PDF means a forwarded or leaked email does not expose the contents without the password.
Sending documents to a CA or lawyer
Share the file by email and the password by a different channel, such as a phone call or a message, so one intercepted channel is not enough to read it.
Storing scans on a shared or cloud drive
Passport, Aadhaar or medical scans kept in a shared folder are readable by anyone with folder access. A password adds a second lock that travels with the file wherever it is copied.
Tips
- Length matters more than symbols. A four-word passphrase is far harder to guess than a short password with a symbol swapped in, and offline cracking tools try common substitutions first.
- Never send the password in the same email as the file. That only protects against people who are not reading the email.
- Avoid date-of-birth or PAN-style passwords for anything truly sensitive. Banks use them for convenience, but they are short and guessable by anyone who knows a little about you.
- Store the password somewhere safe. There is no recovery: if it is lost, the content cannot be opened by this tool, by Unlock, or by File Studio.
Limitations
- The copy and edit restrictions are requests honoured by well-behaved readers, not real protection. Once someone opens the file, many programs can ignore those flags. Only the opening password actually keeps content private.
- There is a single password field. The owner (permissions) password is derived from the opening password rather than set separately, so anyone who can open the file can also remove its restrictions. Do not rely on restrictions to stop a recipient who has the password.
- AES-256 is supported by current readers, but very old PDF software that predates it may refuse to open the file.
- One PDF is protected at a time, and you cannot choose which permissions are restricted.
What happens to your files
The PDF and the password are processed in your browser by pdf-lib; neither is uploaded or logged. The password lives in page memory only while you are on the tool and is not saved. The encrypted output is kept in the on-device workspace (IndexedDB, expiring after seven days), so that copy is already locked; the original unencrypted file also remains in the workspace if you added it there, so delete it if the device is shared.

Add 256-bit AES Password to Any PDF
File Studio encrypts with AES-256, the strongest method the PDF standard defines. Once a password is set, the page content cannot be opened or viewed without it. The cipher itself is not the weak point — the password is. A short or common password can be guessed by offline cracking tools, so use a long passphrase for anything sensitive.
Your Password Never Leaves Your Device
File Studio performs the encryption locally in your browser. Your password exists only in your device's memory while the file is being encrypted and is never transmitted over the internet, so there is no server copy of either the password or the document.
Compatible With Adobe, Chrome and All PDF Readers
The encrypted PDF follows the PDF standard and opens in current readers: Adobe Acrobat Reader, the viewers built into Chrome, Edge and Firefox, Apple Preview on Mac and the Files app on iPhone. The password prompt appears automatically — no plugin is needed. Very old readers that predate AES-256 support may refuse the file.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I password protect a PDF online for free?
- Upload your PDF to File Studio, type your password, and click Protect. A fully encrypted PDF downloads immediately. No account or server required.
- What encryption standard does File Studio use?
- AES-256, the strongest encryption the PDF standard defines (security handler revision 6). Without the password the file cannot be opened; how hard it is to guess depends on how long and random your password is.
- Will the password-protected PDF work in all PDF readers?
- Current readers — Adobe Acrobat Reader, Chrome and Edge, Firefox, Apple Preview and the iPhone Files app — ask for the password and open it. Very old readers that predate AES-256 support may refuse the file.
- Is my password safe? Does File Studio see it?
- Your password is 100% private. The encryption runs entirely in your browser — your password is never transmitted to any server. Even we cannot see it.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- No. File Studio is built on a strict local-first architecture. Every PDF operation — merging, splitting, compressing, redacting — runs entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Your files never leave your computer. You can even disconnect your internet after the page loads and the tools will continue working perfectly.
- Is File Studio completely free?
- Yes, 100% free with no limits. There are no file size caps, no daily limits, no watermarks added to your output, and no account or email required. All tools are free forever.
- Does it work on mobile and tablet?
- Yes. File Studio is fully responsive and works on Android and iOS browsers. All processing happens locally on your phone's or tablet's hardware.
