Convert PDF to Grayscale Online Free — Black & White

Convert a colour PDF to black and white in one click. Every page becomes a grayscale image, ready for black-ink printing. Free, no upload, no watermark.

About Grayscale

Grayscale renders every page of a PDF, converts the colours to shades of grey with the standard luminance weighting (0.299 red, 0.587 green, 0.114 blue) and rebuilds the document from those grey page images at the original page size. The result prints the same on any printer and uses only black toner or ink.

How to use Grayscale

  1. Drop a PDF on the upload area, or pick one from your Workspace.
  2. Click Convert to Grayscale. A progress bar shows each page as it is rendered.
  3. Check the result card, which compares the original and grayscale file sizes and shows the change as a percentage.
  4. Click Download, or Try Again to go back. The grayscale PDF is also saved to your Workspace with _grayscale added to the name.

When it helps

Printing at a shop that charges per colour page

A slide deck or a report with coloured headers can be counted as colour pages. Converting first guarantees every page prints as black and white.

Checking readability in black and white

Charts that rely on red versus green can become two identical greys. Converting shows how a document will look on a mono printer or a photocopy before you send it out.

Mono copies of coloured certificates

When a form asks for a black and white copy of a document, this produces it without rescanning.

What happens to your files

PDF.js renders each page on a canvas in your browser, the grey conversion is done on the pixels in that canvas, and pdf-lib writes the new PDF, all on your device. The file is not uploaded. The grayscale copy is kept in your Workspace, which is stored locally in IndexedDB until you delete it.

Save Printer Ink by Converting to Black and White

Colour printing costs significantly more than black and white — both in ink and per-page charges at print shops. File Studio converts your colour PDFs to grayscale, allowing you to print them using only black ink. This is especially useful for documents where colour adds no informational value: text-heavy reports, contracts, reference materials, and study notes. Each page is rendered at about 108 DPI, turned grey with the standard luminance formula and stored as a JPEG image, which prints clearly but means text in the result can no longer be selected.

What Changes When a PDF Is Converted

Because every page is rebuilt as an image, the file size can move in either direction: a PDF of colour photos or scans often gets smaller, while a text-only PDF usually grows, since its text was compact vector data before. Links, form fields and bookmarks are not carried over. If a portal needs a specific resolution or a 1-bit black and white scan, the PDF DPI tool gives you that control.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to black and white online?
Upload your PDF and click Convert to Grayscale. Every page is rendered and turned into shades of grey; the result is saved to your workspace with a Download button.
Does converting to grayscale reduce file size?
Not always. Each page is rebuilt as a grayscale JPEG image, so PDFs full of photos or colour scans often get smaller, while text-only PDFs usually get bigger because their text was compact vector data. The result card shows both sizes.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. File Studio is built on a strict local-first architecture. Every PDF operation — merging, splitting, compressing, redacting — runs entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Your files never leave your computer. You can even disconnect your internet after the page loads and the tools will continue working perfectly.
Is File Studio completely free?
Yes, 100% free with no limits. There are no file size caps, no daily limits, no watermarks added to your output, and no account or email required. All tools are free forever.
Does it work on mobile and tablet?
Yes. File Studio is fully responsive and works on Android and iOS browsers. All processing happens locally on your phone's or tablet's hardware.
