When it helps
Starting a new Blogspot blog
A new blog on Blogger's default theme can look like many others. Pick the theme that matches the topic, put in the blog name, and the blog has its own look before the first post goes up.
A Tamil or regional-language news site
Thamizh Seithi uses Tamil fonts, Tamil interface words (read more, older posts, categories and so on) and wider line spacing for Tamil script. Set Blogger's blog language to Tamil so dates and the comment form match.
Refreshing an old blog without losing posts
Changing the theme does not touch posts, pages, labels or comments. Back up the old theme first; if you don't like the new one, Restore brings the old file back.
Tips
- Give every post a large landscape picture near the top: Blogger uses the first image as the card picture, and the theme crops it to the card shape.
- Set Settings → Posts → Max posts shown on main page to the number the checklist suggests, so the grid has no half-empty last row.
- After installing, open Layout and edit the Pages gadget, otherwise the menu stays empty.
- Colours and fonts can be changed later in Theme → Customize → Advanced, so you don't need to come back here for small changes.
- Use the warnings under Colours: they appear when text would be hard to read on the colour behind it.
Limitations
- The preview is a static copy with sample posts: Blogger fills in real posts, gadgets and comments only after you install the theme.
- Blogger's comment form, Popular Posts and Blog Archive gadgets use Blogger's own markup, styled by the theme; they can look slightly different from the preview.
- The ticker in the top bar shows text you edit in its HTML gadget; it does not update itself with new posts.
- Fonts load from Google Fonts. A font chosen later in Theme → Customize that is not one of Blogger's web fonts may fall back to the system font.
What happens to your files
The preview, theme.xml, README and ZIP are generated in your browser; nothing about your blog is uploaded. The preview loads its fonts from Google Fonts and the sample pictures from this site. Your settings are saved only in this browser's local storage so they are still there next time.
Twenty Themes for Different Kinds of Blogs
Aurora Minimal is a calm single-column personal blog with serif headlines. Headline Pro is a news magazine with a breaking-news ticker, a lead story and a three-column grid. Terminal Dev is a dark coding blog with monospace details and styled code blocks. Saffron Kitchen is a warm recipe blog with a recipe-card style for posts. Wanderlust is an image-led travel journal with titles over the photos. Folio Studio is a gallery-style portfolio. Notebook Academy suits study notes, with numbered lessons and note boxes. Ledger Finance is a crisp personal-finance theme with a market ticker and stat cards. Blush Edit is an editorial fashion and lifestyle theme. Thamizh Seithi is a Tamil news portal with Tamil fonts, Tamil interface text and wider line spacing.
What the Theme Does on Blogger
Every theme is a Blogger layouts version 3 theme with responsive design, so phones get the same design as computers. The header shows your blog title (or logo) and a Pages menu that turns into a tap-to-open menu on phones. The homepage lists your posts as cards with each post's first image, its first label, the author and date; label, search and archive pages use the same cards with a heading. A post page shows the labels, title, author, date, the post itself, WhatsApp, Facebook and X share links and Blogger's comment form. The sidebar and footer hold About text, Popular Posts, a label cloud, the archive and follow links, all as normal gadgets you can move or remove in Layout.
Settings, Preview and Download
The colours, fonts, text size, width and corner radius you pick are written into the theme as Blogger skin variables, so Theme → Customize → Advanced can change them later. Layout options (sidebar left, right or none, columns, hero banner, top bar, automatic dark mode) change the theme's structure. The preview uses the same CSS and markup as the theme with sample posts, on a desktop or phone-sized screen. The ZIP has one folder per theme with theme.xml, preview pages, a README with the recommended Blogger settings and a short install guide; Download all puts all 20 folders in one ZIP. Everything is built in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I install a Blogger template from the ZIP?
- Unzip the download and open the theme's folder. In Blogger go to Theme, click the arrow next to Customize, choose Backup to save your current theme, then Restore → Upload and pick theme.xml from the folder. Then use Layout to choose the pages in the menu and the gadgets in the sidebar and footer. Each folder has a HOW-TO-INSTALL.txt and a README.md with the same steps.
- Are these Blogger templates free, and is there a footer credit?
- Yes, all 20 are free to use and change on your own blogs, including commercial ones. There is no encrypted footer link and no hidden script. The only credit is Blogger's own Attribution gadget (Powered by Blogger), which Blogger requires on every theme.
- Can I change the colours and fonts after installing?
- Yes. The colours, fonts, width and corner radius you choose here become the theme's default skin variables, so they also appear in Blogger under Theme → Customize → Advanced, where you can change them again at any time without editing code.
- Are the templates mobile friendly and SEO friendly?
- They are responsive (one design that adapts from phones to large screens, with a tap-to-open menu on phones), use Blogger's layouts version 3, load Blogger's own meta tags, canonical link and Open Graph tags, add Twitter card tags and BlogPosting structured data on posts, and use proper headings: the blog title is the H1 on the homepage and the post title is the H1 on a post page.
- Which Blogger settings should I change after installing?
- Turn on HTTPS redirect, set the number of posts on the main page to the value the tool suggests for your theme so the grid fills evenly, set comment location to Embedded, enable the search description and custom robots header tags (noindex for archive and search pages), and add a custom robots.txt. The tool shows the full checklist for the theme you pick, and the README in the ZIP has it too.
- Do the templates include pictures?
- No pictures are part of the themes. On your blog, each post card shows that post's first image, and posts without an image get a coloured pattern drawn with CSS. The sample photos in the preview are only there to show the design.
- Is anything uploaded when I make or download a template?
- No. The preview, the theme XML and the ZIP are all generated in your browser. File Studio never sees your blog, and the theme talks only to Blogger and Google Fonts once it is installed.
