Compress PDF Online Free — Reduce File Size Instantly

Compress a PDF to 100KB, 200KB, 500KB or under 2MB with a clear pass/fail check. Text stays sharp. No upload, no account — runs in your browser.

About Compress

Compress makes a PDF smaller in one of two ways. Keep text sharp re-encodes only the photos and scanned images inside the PDF and leaves text, links and forms alone; Pages to images redraws every page as a JPEG, which is smaller but turns text into a picture. You can choose a strength (Low, Medium, High) or enter a target size and let the tool search for the gentlest setting that fits.

How to use Compress

  1. Drop in the PDF you need to shrink.
  2. Choose Level or Target size at the top.
  3. With Level, pick Low, Medium or High and a method: Keep text sharp (recommended) or Pages to images. The size shown under each level is a rough estimate, not a promise.
  4. With Target size, type a number and choose KB or MB, or tap a chip (100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB, 2 MB). Any value from 10 KB to 100 MB is accepted.
  5. Click Compress PDF (or Compress to your size). Compare the original and new sizes, and in target mode check the pass or fail mark, then press Download.

When it helps

Meeting a portal's KB limit

Exam and recruitment forms often cap uploads at a few hundred KB. Target size first tries shrinking only the images, from about 2400 px at 85% JPEG quality down to 500 px at 42%, and only falls back to pages-to-images (150 dpi down to 50 dpi) if that cannot get under the limit. The result tells you which method won.

Emailing a photo-heavy brochure

A brochure exported with full-resolution photos is a good fit for Level → Medium with Keep text sharp: images are limited to 1800 px on the long side at 75% quality, and the typeset text stays crisp.

Shrinking a phone scan

A PDF made from camera photos is all image anyway, so Pages to images costs little and often gives the smallest file. Check the result at 100% zoom before submitting.

Tips

Limitations

What happens to your files

Images are decoded and re-encoded with the browser's own canvas and JPEG encoder, and pages are rendered with pdf.js, all inside your tab, so the PDF is never uploaded. The compressed copy is added to your File Studio workspace in IndexedDB on this device (unless it ended up identical to the original), and the download only happens when you press Download.

Compress PDF Under 2MB for Government Portals

Many Indian government portals and university admission forms set an upload limit of a few MB, often 2MB; check the exact figure on your own form, because limits vary and change. File Studio's compression tool is built for this use case. Switch to 'Target size' and pick 2 MB, and the tool searches for the best quality that still fits. Typed text stays sharp, and scans are reduced only as much as the limit requires. If you prefer to choose yourself, the Low, Medium and High levels are still there.

Compress PDF to 200 KB, 100 KB or Any Exact Size

Exam, recruitment and scholarship forms often ask for much less: 100 KB, 200 KB or 500 KB. In Target size mode you type the limit (or tap a 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB or 2 MB chip) and File Studio works through settings until the file fits, stopping at the gentlest one that does. It tries the text-sharp method first, shrinking only the photos and scans inside the PDF while text, links and form fields stay as they are. Only if that cannot reach your size does it turn pages into images, and the result says so, because text in that version can no longer be selected. You see the original size, the new size and the exact byte count, with a pass mark only when the file is at or below the limit. A KB is counted as 1,000 bytes, the stricter reading, so a 200 KB result is at most 200,000 bytes and is accepted whether the portal counts 1,000 or 1,024. Some files cannot get that small: a 30-page colour scan will not fit in 100 KB at any readable quality. In that case the tool shows the smallest size it reached and suggests what to do instead: split the PDF, delete pages you do not need, or convert it to grayscale first.

3 Compression Levels — Low, Medium, High

Different situations call for different compression strategies. Low limits images to 2600 pixels on the long side at 85% JPEG quality — a slight reduction for portfolios and design documents. Medium uses 1800 pixels at 75%, suitable for most office documents and presentations. High uses 1200 pixels at 60% for the biggest reduction — meant for email attachments and portal uploads where file size matters more than print quality.

No Quality Loss on Text — Only Images Are Compressed

A common concern with PDF compression is text becoming blurry or unreadable. File Studio's default 'Keep text sharp' method re-encodes only the embedded images and leaves vector text completely untouched. Text in PDFs is stored as mathematical curves, not pixels, so it remains perfectly sharp at any zoom level. The 'Pages to images' method, which target mode also falls back to when nothing else fits, is the exception: it turns each page into a picture, and the tool tells you when that happened. This makes compressed PDFs suitable for official submissions where text clarity is mandatory.

Compress PDF for Email, WhatsApp and Portal Uploads

Email services like Gmail limit attachments to 25MB, and messaging apps have their own document limits. Government and corporate portals often set much lower limits. File Studio helps you prepare documents for any sharing scenario. After compression, the tool displays both original and compressed file sizes so you can immediately verify the result meets your target. If needed, you can change the setting and compress again straight away.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a PDF online for free?
Upload your PDF to File Studio, select your compression level (Low, Medium, or High), and click Compress PDF. Then click Download to save the smaller file. No account, no upload to any server.
How do I compress a PDF under 2MB for government portals?
Open Compress PDF, switch to 'Target size', pick the 2 MB chip and click Compress. File Studio finds the best quality that still fits under 2 MB and shows the exact byte count with a pass or fail badge, so you know before you upload.
How do I compress a PDF to 200 KB?
Open Compress PDF, switch to 'Target size' and pick 200 KB (or open filestudio.in/pdf/compress?target=200). File Studio first shrinks only the photos inside the PDF so text stays sharp; only if that can't reach 200 KB does it turn pages into images. The result shows the exact size, and a ✅ only when it is at or below 200,000 bytes. If even the smallest version is too big, it tells you the smallest size it reached so you can split the PDF or remove pages.
Will text quality be affected after compression?
Not with the default 'Keep text sharp' method: it re-encodes only the photos, and text, which is stored as vectors, stays sharp and selectable. Text becomes part of an image only if you choose 'Pages to images', or if target mode can't reach your size any other way — the result tells you when that happened.
Does a 200 KB limit mean 200,000 or 204,800 bytes?
Portals differ, so target mode counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes — the stricter reading. A file it marks as under 200 KB is at most 200,000 bytes and passes either way.
Is it safe to compress tax documents and bank statements?
Yes. File Studio processes everything in your browser. Your financial documents are never uploaded to any server — not even temporarily.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. File Studio is built on a strict local-first architecture. Every PDF operation — merging, splitting, compressing, redacting — runs entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Your files never leave your computer. You can even disconnect your internet after the page loads and the tools will continue working perfectly.
Is File Studio completely free?
Yes, 100% free with no limits. There are no file size caps, no daily limits, no watermarks added to your output, and no account or email required. All tools are free forever.
Does it work on mobile and tablet?
Yes. File Studio is fully responsive and works on Android and iOS browsers. All processing happens locally on your phone's or tablet's hardware.
