Split PDF Page in Half

Split each PDF page in half vertically or horizontally: scanned book spreads become single pages, A4 becomes two A5. Drag the cut line. Text stays selectable. Free, no upload.

Split Scanned Book Pages into Single Pages

When a book is scanned open on a flatbed or with a phone, each PDF page holds two book pages side by side. Choose Left | Right and every page is cut down the middle into two pages, in reading order. If the scan begins with a single front cover, tick Keep the first page whole; if it mixes two-page spreads with single portrait pages, tick Split only landscape pages and the portrait pages are left alone. Books read right to left, such as Urdu, Arabic, Hebrew or manga, need the right half first, which the Right-to-left option does.

Vertical or Horizontal, Exactly Where You Want

The cut doesn't have to be in the middle. Drag the dashed line on the preview, or use the slider, to move it anywhere from 5% to 95% of the page, for example when a scan is off-centre or the gutter is wider on one side. Top / Bottom cuts pages horizontally, which suits forms or slips printed twice on one sheet. The page thumbnails show which pages will be cut and the counter shows the result before you start, such as 12 pages → 22 pages.

A4 to A5 PDF

A5 (148 × 210 mm) is exactly half of A4 (210 × 297 mm). A4 → two A5 cuts every sheet into its two halves: left and right for landscape A4, top and bottom for portrait A4, giving pages of 420.94 × 595.28 points. A4 → A5 size keeps one page per sheet and shrinks the whole page by about 71% onto an A5 sheet, so nothing is cut off. That is the option to use when a printer, publisher or form asks for an A5 PDF.

Text Stays Text, and the File Stays on Your Device

Most page splitters render each half as a picture. Here each half keeps the original page content and only the visible area of the page changes, so typed text stays selectable and searchable, drawings stay sharp, and the file barely grows. Rotated pages are cut along the line you see. The whole job runs in your browser, so scanned books and documents are never uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I split a PDF page in half?
Open the PDF here, choose Split each page and pick Left | Right for a vertical cut or Top / Bottom for a horizontal one. Drag the cut line on the preview if the middle isn't right, then tap Split. Every page that is cut becomes two pages in the new PDF, in reading order.
How do I split a scanned book where each PDF page has two pages?
Use Left | Right. Tick Keep the first page whole if the scan starts with a single cover, and Split only landscape pages if the scan mixes two-page spreads with single pages. For Urdu, Arabic, Hebrew or manga, tick Right-to-left book so the right half comes first.
How do I convert A4 to A5 in a PDF?
Choose A4 → two A5 to cut each A4 sheet into its two A5 halves (landscape sheets left and right, portrait sheets top and bottom), or A4 → A5 size to shrink each whole page onto an A5 sheet without cutting anything off.
Does splitting turn my pages into images?
No. Each half keeps the original page content and only its visible area changes, so text stays selectable and searchable and drawings stay sharp. The file grows very little because both halves share the same page content.
Does it handle rotated pages?
Yes. The cut is placed on the page as you see it, so a page stored sideways with a rotation flag is split along the line shown in the preview.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. File Studio is built on a strict local-first architecture. Every PDF operation — merging, splitting, compressing, redacting — runs entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Your files never leave your computer. You can even disconnect your internet after the page loads and the tools will continue working perfectly.
Is File Studio completely free?
Yes, 100% free with no limits. There are no file size caps, no daily limits, no watermarks added to your output, and no account or email required. All tools are free forever.
Does it work on mobile and tablet?
Yes. File Studio is fully responsive and works on Android and iOS browsers. All processing happens locally on your phone's or tablet's hardware.
