Compress Video Online — Exact Size, Famous Codecs, No Upload
Compress MP4, MOV and WebM videos to an exact size like 10 MB or 25 MB using H.264, H.265, VP9 or AV1. Runs on your device's own encoder. Free, nothing uploaded.
Compress a Video to an Exact Size
Email attachments, chat apps and upload forms all cap file size. Enter the limit, such as 10 MB or 25 MB, and File Studio calculates how many bits per second the video can afford across its length, then picks the sharpest resolution that budget supports. A small budget at 720p looks far cleaner than the same budget forced into 4K. Encoders only approximate a requested bitrate, so if the first pass lands over the limit, a second pass re-encodes at a corrected bitrate, the same idea as two-pass encoding in professional tools.
H.264, H.265, VP9 and AV1 Explained
H.264 (AVC) is the most widely supported video codec in the world and plays on practically every device, which makes it the right default for sharing. H.265 (HEVC) delivers similar quality at roughly half the size and is standard on iPhones. VP9, developed by Google, powers much of YouTube and achieves similar savings with no licensing barriers. AV1, from the Alliance for Open Media, is the newest and most efficient of the four, but it takes longer to encode and needs a recent device to play smoothly. File Studio shows only the codecs your browser can actually encode.
Your Device Does the Work, Not a Server
Uploading a large personal video to an online compressor means sending hundreds of megabytes of family footage, client work or confidential recordings to someone else's computer. File Studio uses WebCodecs, the video encoder built into your browser, which often runs on your graphics hardware. The video is read from your disk and written back to it; nothing is uploaded. Phone videos often carry GPS coordinates and device details in their metadata, and those are removed by default.
Resolution, Frame Rate, Audio and Trim
Lower the resolution to 1080p, 720p or 480p, cap the frame rate at 30 or 24 frames per second, and keep, compress or remove the audio track. Trim the start and end to cut dead air before compressing, which saves bytes for the part that matters. When the encode finishes, a synced before-and-after player lets you drag across the frame to compare the original with the compressed version before you download it.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I compress a video to a specific size, like 25 MB?
- Choose Target size and enter 25 MB. File Studio works out the bitrate the video can afford, picks the sharpest resolution that fits, and encodes it. If the first pass lands over the limit, a second pass re-encodes at a corrected bitrate so the file ends up under your target.
- Which codec should I choose?
- H.264 plays on every phone, TV and app, so it's the safest choice for sharing. H.265 (HEVC) and VP9 produce files around a third to a half smaller at the same quality. AV1 is the newest and most efficient, but it encodes more slowly and needs a recent device to play. Codecs your browser can't encode are shown as unavailable.
- Is my video uploaded anywhere?
- No. Compression uses your browser's built-in video encoder (WebCodecs), which often runs on your graphics hardware. The video is read from your disk, encoded on your device and saved back to it. Nothing is sent to a server.
- Does it remove location data from phone videos?
- Yes, by default. Phone videos often carry GPS coordinates, the device model and a recording date in their metadata. The Remove metadata option, on by default, leaves those tags out of the compressed file.
- Why can't the browser encode H.265?
- Browsers only offer H.265 encoding when your device has a hardware encoder for it, which most recent Macs, iPhones and many Windows PCs with modern graphics do. Where it isn't available, VP9 or AV1 give similar savings.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- No. File Studio is built on a strict local-first architecture. Every PDF operation — merging, splitting, compressing, redacting — runs entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Your files never leave your computer. You can even disconnect your internet after the page loads and the tools will continue working perfectly.
- Is File Studio completely free?
- Yes, 100% free with no limits. There are no file size caps, no daily limits, no watermarks added to your output, and no account or email required. All tools are free forever.
- Does it work on mobile and tablet?
- Yes. File Studio is fully responsive and works on Android and iOS browsers. All processing happens locally on your phone's or tablet's hardware.
