How Anna University GPA and CGPA Work
Every course carries a number of credits, and every letter grade a grade point. Your semester GPA is the sum of credits × grade points over the courses you passed that semester, divided by the sum of their credits. Your CGPA is the same sum taken over every semester. Because the credits weight each course, a 4-credit theory course moves the result more than a 1.5-credit lab, and the CGPA is not the average of your semester GPAs. Courses with a U (re-appearance), SA (shortage of attendance) or withdrawal grade add nothing until cleared, and non-credit mandatory courses are never counted. The calculator does this with whole-number arithmetic, so a result like 8.325 is never shown as 8.32 because of a floating-point slip.
R2021, R2023 and R2025: Which One Is Yours
R2021 covers B.E./B.Tech. students admitted from 2021-22 at Anna University's affiliated non-autonomous colleges and the University Colleges of Engineering, with grades O 10, A+ 9, A 8, B+ 7, B 6 and C 5. R2023 is the regulation of Anna University's own departments at the CEG, ACT and MIT campuses; its 2024 revision names the top grade S instead of O. R2025 covers affiliated colleges from 2025-26 and changes the scale: S 10, A+ 9, A 8, B+ 7, B 6.5, C+ 6 and C 5, with fixed marks ranges. The same letter can be worth different points, so each regulation has its own grade table here, taken from the regulation PDF on cac.annauniv.edu, with the clause numbers shown beside the results. Autonomous colleges publish their own regulations and are not covered.
CGPA to Percentage and Degree Class
All three regulations convert CGPA to a percentage the same way: percentage of marks = CGPA × 10 (R2021 Clause 15.5.3, R2023 and R2025 Clause 21.10), so a CGPA of 8.12 is 81.2%. First Class with Distinction needs a CGPA of at least 8.50 with every course passed at the first attempt within the normal duration, and First Class needs at least 6.50. The calculator shows the band your CGPA falls in but cannot check the attempt and duration conditions. Your subjects are saved in your own browser so you can add each semester as results come out, and you can copy the result or print a summary. File Studio is not affiliated with Anna University; the grade sheet from your college is the official record.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How is Anna University CGPA calculated?
- Multiply each passed course's credits by its grade point, add these up over every semester, and divide by the total credits of those courses: CGPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits. Semester GPA is the same calculation over one semester's courses. Courses with U, SA or withdrawal grades and non-credit mandatory courses are left out (R2021 Clause 15.5).
- How do I convert Anna University CGPA to percentage?
- Multiply the CGPA by 10. R2021 (Clause 15.5.3), R2023 for University Departments (Clause 21.10) and R2025 (Clause 21.10) all state Percentage of Marks = CGPA × 10, so a CGPA of 7.85 is 78.5%. Use the figure printed on your consolidated grade sheet for official purposes.
- Can I just average my semester GPAs to get the CGPA?
- No. Semesters carry different credits, so a plain average of GPAs is usually wrong. CGPA weights every course by its credits. The calculator always works from credits and grade points; if you type semester GPAs instead of subjects, it weights each GPA by that semester's credits.
- Is there an R2023 regulation for affiliated colleges?
- Not for full-time B.E./B.Tech. The 2023 regulation for full-time B.E./B.Tech. applies to Anna University's own departments at the CEG, ACT and MIT campuses. Affiliated non-autonomous colleges follow R2021 for students admitted from 2021-22, and R2025 for students admitted from 2025-26. Autonomous colleges have their own regulations.
- How are arrears and U grades counted?
- A course with a U (re-appearance) grade adds nothing to GPA or CGPA until you clear it. When you clear it, it counts once, with the grade you cleared it with. You can either change the grade in the original semester or add the course again in the semester you cleared it; with the same course code, the calculator counts it only once.
- What changed in the R2025 grade points?
- R2025 adds a C+ grade and uses S 10, A+ 9, A 8, B+ 7, B 6.5, C+ 6 and C 5 (Table 13), with fixed marks ranges for every course. R2021 has O 10, A+ 9, A 8, B+ 7, B 6 and C 5, mostly awarded by relative grading. The same letter can carry different points, so choose the right regulation.
- What CGPA do I need for First Class with Distinction?
- At least 8.50 under R2021, R2023 and R2025, with every course passed at the first appearance within the normal duration. First Class needs at least 6.50. The calculator shows which band your CGPA falls in, but it cannot check the first-attempt and duration conditions.
- Is my data saved or uploaded?
- Your subjects and grades are saved only in your own browser's storage, so they are still there when you come back on the same device. Nothing is sent to a server. Reset all clears them.
